Aquamarine Gemstones History
In ancient India it was said that all the gemstones to come from the earth, aquamarine was the only one that contained an ocean. The Latin root Aqua Marina “Water of the Sea” indicates a transparent gemstone reflecting the myriad hues of the ocean from deep blues to electric greens and many shades in between.
Historically aquamarine was worn as a charm or amulet by seafarers to ensure safe passage. In 1912 The American National Association of Jewellers declared it the birthstone of March. Aquamarine gemstones can be found in many countries around the world; Russia - India - Part of East Africa and Brazil.
Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family which includes emerald. This gemstone is durable in mountings, best set with silver, especially when the gold price is high.
Aquamarine shades easily paired with clothing and makes an excellent evening wear as it performs well under artificial lights.
Caring for Aquamarine gemstones
When cleaning gemstones or jewellery, hot soapy water, followed by a rub with a polishing cloth is best.
With aquamarine the brilliance of the stone can easily be dimmed by superficial dirt so remember to clean the back of the set stones to remove any debris and skin oil.
Ultrasonic cleaners or chemical cleaning agents are not recommended for aquamarine gemstones
